I wonder if the maple syrup smell was the artist’s intent or if that happened while the artwork was in transit?

If it was not the artist’s intent than it is now damaged. How would you file a claim on such a thing, assuming of course that the artwork was purchased free of smell?

Conversely, if it was the artist’s intent, how would you preserve something like that? Is there a proper scientific method of conservation of “maple syrup smell”? Would the conservation treatment require the piece have maple syrup smell be added? An air freshener from the car wash perhaps, or one week isolation at a 24 hour IHOP.
